GC De Hoge Kleij: A Forest Course with Ice Age Roots
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lies one of the Netherlands' most beautiful golf courses—GC De Hoge Kleij. A true nature course, surrounded by forest on gently rolling terrain, it is a delight for both golfers and photographers alike.
The gentle undulations in this part of the Netherlands were formed during the Ice Age, as shifting ice plates pushed up the land. You can still see the effects of this as you walk a round on this magnificent course. The signature hole, the par-5 12th, is a prime example. Standing on the tee box, you look out over a long, downward-sloping fairway that gives you the impression of being in the Ardennes or Sauerland. This hole is long—552 meters from the back tees—and is the only one on the course without bunkers. The final 150 meters drop more steeply downhill, making the approach to the sloping green a real challenge.
A Photographer’s Dream
For golf course photographers, De Hoge Kleij is an absolute paradise. Many holes feature stunning plays of light filtering through the trees. The elevated greens, rolling fairways, and well-placed bunkers cast dramatic shadows when the sun is low, beautifully showcasing the undulating terrain. Each season brings its own charm to this course. In May, when the rhododendrons are in bloom, standing on the tee of the par-3 14th feels like a moment at Augusta. The area behind the lower green transforms into a sea of purple, offering a spectacular view—both to play and to capture through the lens. Heather also plays a defining role on this course. In August, when it’s in full bloom, the open stretch around holes 6, 7, 8, and 9 offers breathtaking scenery. During autumn, misty mornings and golden sunlight create an ambiance reminiscent of courses in the UK, Ireland, or Scotland—simply stunning! This part of the course is one of my favorite places to shoot in the early morning. But playing here is just as rewarding. There are good birdie opportunities, but a poorly placed tee shot can quickly lead to a double bogey.
A True Summer Challenge
Every season presents its own challenges, but during the summer, this course is a true test for any golfer. The greens are firm, requiring a precise approach to hold your ball. Alternatively, you may opt for a more strategic shot—landing short and letting the ball roll onto the green. Once on the green, however, another test awaits—reading the subtle breaks and executing the perfect putting stroke. At times, the greens run at a stimp of 10 or more. If your stroke isn’t solid and the ball isn’t rolling cleanly, expect some surprising results—and plenty of three-putts.
For a golf course photographer, capturing the quality of the greens and the precision mowing of the aprons is a real joy. The sharp mowing patterns create leading lines that draw the viewer into the image, making you want to experience the course for yourself.
A Must-Play Course
In short, GC De Hoge Kleij is a must-visit for golfers and photographers alike.
